Below is
information on the basics of blueprints and how to read
them:
Blueprint
Sizes: At ABC, our standard print size is 24" x 36" and we
print in-house. Before the advent of computer generated
blueprints, home plans were created by hand-drawing the information
on vellum. Then the vellum was processed in a similar way as film is
developed, which transposes the blue ink print on paper. We use the
term "blueprint" to this day even though todays blueprints are
printed in black ink on large inkjet plotters. Other size
sheets are also available.
Scale:
Every blueprint sheet has a key which indicates the scale of that
drawing. Usually the scale is 1/4" = 1'. In otherwords, 1/4" on the
paper equals 1 foot in "real life". Other typical scales are 3/16"
or 1/8", depending on the application and scope of the
project.
Site
Plan: Site plans are a map of the site and the
location of the structure to be built. They typically include
set-backs, easements, dimensions, driveways, sidewalks,
etc.
Floor
Plan: Floor plans provide you with an overhead view of the
layout of the home and associated walls, fixtures, cabinetry,
stairs, etc. As well, it provides dimensional aspects of the
structure.
Electrical
Plan: These plans are provided so that
your electrician knows the types and locations of outlets,
fixtures, lights, fans, etc.
Elevations: Elevations are drawings that
show what all four sides of a structure will look like. Some basic
dimensions are included in the elevation drawings.
Foundation
Plan: This plan shows the location and types of footings,
walls, and other structural features needed to support the walls and
roof.
Roof Plan:
This plan shows the basic design and layout of the roof system, as
well as how it fits on the walls below.
Structural
Plan: This sheet shows where shear panels and hold downs
need to be placed, as well as headers and beams. As well, we provide
Floor Framing Plans. This information may be supplied as part of
other drawings also.
Cross Sections
& Details: This plan shows a cross section, or slice of
the home. It provides close up detail of stairs, roof, rafters, floor
heights, footing / pad thickness, etc.
General Compliance
Notes: This sheet contains information in relation to local
code requirements, timber, energy conservation, plumbing and
heating, etc.
A full set of home
plans typically contains between 7 and 11
sheets.
